CHAPTER 22

Lauren was in her apartment packing up clothes when her phone went off. She didn’t recognize the number and sent it automatically to voicemail. As she stuffed as much as she could in a suitcase, the phone vibrated again. Same number. After 10 calls from the same number, she finally answered the phone without saying a word. She just listened.

“Lauren, it’s Georgie. Georgie Hopkins.” The voice on the other end of the phone was steady and cheery. Like an old friend reaching out to touch someone.

“The security guard from the prison?” Lauren flopped on the bed confused. She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear as she listened.

“Yes, exactly. Listen, I’m calling on behalf of Jasper. He needs to see you. Can you come right away?” The line was quiet. The kind of quiet when one thinks the other person probably hung up.

“Uh, I’m not his lawyer anymore, Georgie. I mean, I want to try to help him but I don’t work for Darla anymore so I don’t think they will let me in to see him. It looks like Darla got him another appeal. Does he know that?” But Lauren wanted to see him and she still wanted to help him.

“Lauren, I can’t say much but there won’t be another appeal. Listen, just get down here. It doesn’t matter that you’re not his lawyer anymore. He needs to see you and he trusts you. I’m telling him you’ll be here in an hour. Dress to impress.” Georgie hung up the phone.

Lauren stared at it, ‘Dress to impress. What the hell is he talking about? She sat there looking around her old apartment, the one she was completely about to abandon. Her eyes moved to her overstuffed suitcase. Right on top was her sexiest black dress. The one with the plunging back and front. Peter had bought it for her when they had been in Paris, “Dress to impress.” She pulled it from the suitcase and prepared to head to the prison.

Jasper had just showered and Georgie let him shave. They went over the plan as Jasper shaved. Georgie never had to worry about Jasper turning on him so he gave him the razor to clean up for his big date. They were brothers and they would honor their bond even though Jasper could cut his throat with the razor right now.

“Ok, so you understand what you have to do?” Georgie was staring at him, “Don’t fuck up, Jasper. You need to make sure you’re in place when I hit that button.”

Jasper didn’t say a word. He just nodded as his strong hand moved the razor up his neck and then under his chin. Mentally, he was fully prepared. They had gone over the plan no less than a dozen times, maybe more like three dozen.

After he washed the residual shaving cream from his face, he dressed in a fresh pair of beige prison scrubs and a white thermal shirt. The thermal hugged his muscular body. He pushed the sleeves up his arm, to just under his elbow.
